(And the recipe that will make you want to too!)

Box brownies are easy…so, so easy and they are always a hit. (Violation of Cornerstone #4 right there, but I digress) There was a time when 3 brownies on the counter would disappear throughout the day, one little piece at a time. Did I mention that our children are all in school so I’m the only one home?

But that was then and this is now and I wouldn’t eat so much as a crumb! There are too many interesting ‘extras’. The first ingredients in box brownies is sugar. The list also includes partially hydrogenated soybean oil, maltodextrin, natural and artificial flavors, acacia and xanthan gums, natural and artificial flavor. But let’s just talk about the sugar.

Did you know?
• Refined sugar feeds harmful bacteria, viruses, yeasts, and other pathogens in our bodies
• Sugar suppresses the immune system by decreasing white blood cells’ ability to capture bacteria
• Many of the “hip” and so-called “healthy” forms of sugar like agave and coconut sugar are throwing your immune system out of wack

Sugar feeds bad stuff and suppresses good stuff? What? I am so not kidding on this one. This isn’t even new information; it’s been around for decades! This is information that would have been useful every time I walked into the doctor’s office coughing, congested and miserable, or worse when I walked in with children who were coughing, congested and miserable. They could have recovered sooner? Gotten sick less often? Why didn’t someone tell me?

This awesome information and much more is explained in the Healthy Sugar class of Simply Divine Eating (SDE). You will be astounded at what else you didn’t know.

Of course SDE living doesn’t mean giving up brownies. You will also learn to make scrumptious, good for you food (like rich, yummy brownies, oh my) that follows the 4 Cornerstones of Lifelong Health.

So if you need me I’ll be in the kitchen mixing up brownies without the box. Here is the recipe so you can join me!

Simply Divine Fudgy Blender Brownies
1.5 c. cooked black beans
2 eggs
½ c. unsweetened applesauce
2-4 T raw honey
10 pitted medjool dates
1 tsp real vanilla
½ c. cocoa powder
¼ tsp salt
½ tsp baking soda

Place all ingredients in blender and process until smooth. Scrape batter into parchment lined 8 x 8 pan. Bake at 350’ for 30 minutes. (Or just eat the batter which taste like rich, creamy, dark chocolate pudding, yum)

Cool completely before cutting. These are very rich so you don’t need much. This made about 15 brownies. Store in refrigerator.  We eat ours with blackberries or chocolate coconut cream frosting.
