Awhile back I started a post about how this journey with healthy food isn’t a sprint but a marathon.  While that is true, I’m not a runner, I don’t want to be a runner, and I don’t even really like to think about running.  So I’m not sure what was I doing writing about running and marathon training. (I’ll take yoga thanks)  I’ve come up with a better analogy.  At the start of this new year, I suggest you give yourself permission to be in preschool.

Sometimes in our home, our older children would walk past a younger sibling sweating over homework and say, “That’s super easy. I can do it in a minute.”   I’d gently explain to both of them that it should be super easy if you are grades ahead, but we would never expect a 2nd grader to do 4th grade work, nor a 4th grader to do 10th grade work.  Learning is a process.  Change is a process.  Our objective is to be continually learning and improving.  If we keep at it, we master one subject after another and our ever enlarging capabilities allow us to do things we once never believed was possible.

My experience with food has been the same.  It takes time to align your diet with the SDE Cornerstones.  It’s a lot like going to preschool, then grade school, and then getting a graduate degree.   Over time I have learned to have a long-term perspective so that I don’t get overwhelmed or discouraged.   Just like school, our success is determined more by our commitment to the process than by where we are at the moment.  We have to start somewhere and some of the work will be difficult to master.  We might bang our fists in frustration, or break a spatula or two.  But like long division or times tables,  if we persist it will be come easy.  And the greatest reward is that mastering new skills and becoming more aligned with truth brings us a whole new level of joy!

So take a moment and give yourself permission to be a 4 Cornerstones preschooler.  Start at the beginning and don’t expect yourself to be any where else but where you are, persistently working and learning and moving forward. One day you’ll look back and realize that what was difficult today is now “super easy and you can do it in a minute.”

Grab a healthy snack, a blanket for nap time and get started today.  School is in session.  Listen to one of the online classes for motivation, or join us at our retreat for hands-on classes on natural yeast bread, fermenting and so much more.  We are here to help you every step of the way to your ultimate health!
